KASSALA-HAIYA ROAD

Expansion abroad and international recognition

Separator

The construction of the road linking the Sudanese cities of Kassala and Haiya was part of the country's major road network improvement scheme to create better links between internal regions and especially between Khartoum and Port Sudan with a 1,200 km road linking the internal regions of the country with the Red Sea. Lot 3 of that road, the section between Kassala and Haiya, was opened in 1980. The two-lane, ten-metre wide road covers a distance of 350 km. It includes 68 bridges in reinforced concrete founded on piles 1 metre in diameter. Located in a particularly arid desert region, the project also involved the construction of a pipeline more than 300 km long to supply water to the local populations, for domestic and agricultural use. In 1976 Recchi built Kassala airport.
