LEKEMPTI-GHIMBI ROAD

Opening up to the international market

Separator

The road was built to link the Ethiopian cities of Lekempti and Ghimbi, important coffee production and distribution areas on the route between Addis Ababa and the agricultural region of Wollega. The project was an important step towards ending the isolation of ethnic groups in the region; before the road was built practically the only way of reaching the rest of the country was by air. The new "coffee road" is 111 km long. It crosses a mountainous area and several waterways which required the construction of eight reinforced concrete bridges.
